Apesar de
relações sociais serem conhecidas para diversas espécies, pesquisas deste tipo
eram concentradas em alguns grupos, como mamíferos,aves e insetos, enquanto
grupos como os repteis, em especial as serpentes eram considerados animais
associais e ignorados nesta área, afinal normalmente são vistos sozinhos.
Although social relationships are known for several species, this kind of research was concentrated in some groups, such as mammals, birds
and insects, whil groups as reptiles, specially the snakes, were asssumed as asocials and ignored in this area, after all these animals are normally found alone.

para testar esta hipótese.

They captured three pregnant females of T. Sitalis and kept
them in the laboratory until they were born, the three broods totaled 30 snakes
and bought another 10 snakes of the same age from a (legalized) breeder.

construidos quatro viveiros medindo cerca de 70 X 30 cm com
quatro abrios de plastico preto em cada. Cada viveiro recebeu 10
serpentes aleatoriamente. As serpentes foram marcadas com esmalte não toxico
para facilitar o reconhecimento e uma camera foi istalada em cada viveiro para
registrar o comportmento do animais.
Four nurseries measuring about 70 X 30 cm were built with
four black plastic openings in each. Each pond received 10 snakes at random.
The snakes were marked with non-toxic enamel to facilitate recognition and a
camera was installed in each pond to record the animals' behavior.

uma preferencia por se agrupar com individuos especificos.
They removed the snakes from the shelters and randomly
redistributed them four times a day, to see how they reacted and found that
they remained longer when there were certain specific individuals within the
shelter, that is, they had a preference for grouping with specific individuals.
Os cientistas
testaram se esse padrão de escolha tinha a ver com a ninhada de onde eles
vieram ou com o sexo, mas não encontraram associação com nenhum, o que sugere
que as serentes de fato reconhecem umas as outras e buscam estar na compahia de

Scientists tested whether this pattern of choice had to do
with the litter they came from or sex, but they found no association with any,
suggesting that human beings do recognize each other and seek to be in the
company of specific individuals. regardless of their blood relationship or
their sex, which is very similar to what we humans call friendship.

não podemos afirmar com certeza que estes resultados se repitam em condições
naturais, porem é um forte indicio que quando pensamo em serpentes como seres solitarios
e frios estamos bem enganados.
Scientists recognize that this was an experiment with
manicured conditions and that we cannot say with certainty that these results
will be repeated under natural conditions, however it is a strong indication
that when we think of snakes as solitary and cold beings we are quite mistaken.
